A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Animal Science, Michael has spent the last decade working in pet insurance and animal welfare. His expertise in pet healthcare coverage and passion for dog training make him an invaluable resource for our community. His Border Collie, Max, has been his faithful companion through countless hiking adventures and agility competitions.
Dr. Sarah Mitchell, DVM - Co-Founder/CEO
Dr. Mitchell earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. With over 15 years of clinical experience, she has developed a special interest in herding breeds, particularly Border Collies. Before co-founding Border Collie Planet, she served as chief veterinarian at Boston Animal Hospital and maintained a thriving private practice. Her Border Collie, Luna, is not just her pet but also her inspiration for continuing education in canine behavior and psychology.
Our Story
The story of Border Collie Planet begins with a serendipitous meeting at the 2019 American Veterinary Conference in Chicago. During a panel discussion about breed-specific healthcare needs, Dr. Mitchell and Michael found themselves engaged in an animated conversation about Border Collies. Both were passionate advocates for responsible breeding and proper training of these incredibly intelligent dogs.
Dr. Mitchell shared stories about Luna, her Border Collie who had overcome severe anxiety through specialized training, while Michael talked about his experiences with Max in agility competitions. They discovered they shared a common frustration: despite the breed's popularity, there wasn't a comprehensive, reliable online resource dedicated specifically to Border Collie care and training.
Over coffee that turned into dinner, they sketched out their vision for what would become Border Collie Planet. They wanted to create more than just another pet website – they envisioned a community hub where Border Collie owners could find expert advice, share experiences, and support each other in raising happy, healthy dogs.
Throughout 2019, they worked tirelessly to build their dream. Dr. Mitchell contributed her veterinary expertise and clinical experience, while Michael brought his knowledge of pet insurance and digital content creation. They assembled a network of trainers, behaviorists, and other veterinarians who shared their passion for Border Collies.
In January 2020, Border Collie Planet launched, just as the world was about to change dramatically. The timing proved unexpectedly perfect – with more people adopting dogs during lockdown, our resource became essential for new Border Collie owners navigating puppy parenthood.
Today, Border Collie Planet serves thousands of readers worldwide, offering guidance on everything from puppy selection to senior care. We've expanded to include online training workshops, a monthly newsletter, and an active social media community. Our mission remains unchanged: to help Border Collie owners provide the best possible life for their intelligent, energetic, and loving companions.
